Teach Your Baby To Read

That’s right!  I’m an advocate for teaching infants to read!

Actually, when you read to your infant you really are teaching them to read.   Of course I don’t believe your infant is capable of actually reading anytime soon (sorry if I’ve disappointed you.  If you don’t believe me, check this out.) but everything you do teaches them and so, reading to them starts them on that long and wonderful path of being a reader.  Read those wonderful little board books to them.  Our favorite was Sandra Boynton’s Moo, Baa, La, La, La.  We also loved a bathtub book about Ernie from Sesame Street.  It went like this, “Tubby time is so much fun.  Rubber ducky, you’re the one!  You make bath time so much fun…”  Well, you get the picture.  We made it into a song.

A lot of new parents are going…How am I supposed to READ to my infant???  Well, start by just reading whatever you’re reading to yourself out loud.  Newborns are developing language skills and the more you talk the more they learn.  It is also soothing for them to hear your voice.  By the time your baby is actively looking around at things, start showing them pictures.  Hold them in your lap and show them a book, pointing to the pictures.  Simple pictures are great at this age.  Board books are wonderful because eventually your precious little one is going to touch the book with wet, sticky hands and they are easy to wipe clean.  Choose books with simple pictures and words.  Touch books are great too.  As your baby gets older s/he will enjoy touching the pictures and feeling the different textures.  Let your little one hold the book.  Let them touch it and even mouth it.  They are learning about their senses.  Hey!  Your teaching your baby science!
