We raise chickens. Raising your own food is great for the environment! Here’s why we think having your own chickens is one of the best ways to reduce our carbon footprint.
.) They eat bugs like crazy! As if I need say more. We seldom even need insect repellent when out in our yard.
.) They naturally fertilize our yard. (They are free rangers.)
.) Fresh eggs are healthier and more flavorful.
.) We compost the straw and stuff from their coop and use it as free, organic fertilizer for our flower beds and vegetable garden.
.) We always have eggs to eat. No need to run to town to the store (15 miles away) and waste time and gas because I forget to take something out for supper (which I do often!). We have a ready supply of eggs to make into something fast and easy.
.) We sell our extra eggs to other people that want fresh eggs so we make a little money to offset the cost of feeding them. Or we give them away to people in our community that need a little help with groceries.
.) They are funny to watch! Free entertainment! Super easy pets especially compared to dogs!
.) They love to eat scraps for treats. A great way to get rid of that leftover scoop of noodles or that stale slice of bread.
We have really enjoyed raising our chickens. I know it isn’t an option for everyone but if you can, think about it. You might really like it too. If you want to try it, check out Backyard Chickens.com. It’s fun and gives easy to follow advice.
