R-Controlled Vowels

R-controlled Vowels:  I love this name!  For any of you that don’t know what R-controlled vowels are (I knew them as “the bossy R” from the new PBS show Electric Company), they are those vowels that change their sound when followed by the letter “r.”

Examples: Chore – If you followed the rules (there is a silent “E” at the end of the word), then the “O” should be a long “O.”  Instead it says “or.”
