I have been reading chapter books with my kids since WAY before they could read them for themselves. I read Where the Red Fern Grows by: Wilson Rawls to my two oldest kids when they were 4 and 6, at the request of my six year old. I thought I’d put up a list of some of our favorite series just in case you need a little inspiration.
My Weird School by: Dan Gutman These are funny to kids and adults alike but the do get redundant after about five or six but we loved them for several months.
Junie B. Jones by: Barbara Park She’s funnier to parents than kids but our kids loved the books too.
The Stories Julian Tells by: Ann Cameron We think these books are truly charming. They are stories I could see my own boys making up and telling! A definite must read.
Winnie the Horse Gentler by: Dandi Daley Mackall This is a shorter series so there is an end and the books are each unique but the story flows from one to the next. We especially loved them, the boys too!
The Unicorn’s Secret by: Kathleen Duey These are somewhat of a mystery. We enjoyed figuring trying to figure out the plot. It’s a great story line that also carries from one book to the next so you HAVE to read them all to know what happens! It’s another short series though.
The Cul-De-Sac Kids by: Beverly Lewis These are fun and great for young kids. They can even read some of it themselves. My first grader is loving them! These books teach morals and values while they entertain and show kids how to solve everyday dilemmas like who to give your grandpa a gift when you have no money. I especially love that the kids come from a variety of different types of homes with different economic situations.
