Topic Tuesday: Unemployment Benifits

Okay, I know we were all consumed with the election yesterday but I have a different but still political topic for this week.

Should people that have seasonal jobs be allowed to collect unemployment benefits in their off seasons?

I say no.

If you work in seasonal work then you need to be prepared for your down months.  Maybe you need to divide your paychecks into 12 months so that you can save enough to make it through those months you aren’t working.  Maybe you need to have a job that you can work during your off months so that you have an income.  Maybe you need to get out of seasonal work altogether.

But I don’t think it’s okay for anyone to receive unemployment benefits during their off seasons.  We keep talking about unemployment rates and those rates include people that have jobs but their jobs are seasonal.  That’s not the same thing as unemployed.  When you know that you are going to be out of work regularly then you need to plan ahead and prepare for it instead of using taxpayer’s dollars intended for those that aren’t able to find a job.

I have been reminded a lot lately of a quote I saw above the desk of a woman my husband used to work with.  “Your lack of preparation does not constitute my emergency.”

Let’s start choosing to be responsible for ourselves and our own lives.  There are enough things that happen that we have no control over, don’t give away control over the things you DO have control over.

What do you think?
