Okay, I am NOT against people owning guns. As a matter-of-fact, I believe any mature, responsible person that needs a gun should own one. I also believe though that we, as a country owe it to ourselves and all future generations to put federal laws in place that will protect the general public.
I agree that guns do not kill people, but they are weapons used for the sole purpose of killing. I am sick of hearing people say stupid things like, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” and “criminals don’t follow the law” and the one that makes me see red so much that I actually unfriended people on FB because I am so sick of it, “it’s my constitutional right.” All of those statements are true and yet they are at the intellectual level of a 4 year old. I know this because I have a 5 year old and HE can understand that there is way more to this than those simplistic statements would have one think.
We regulate the wearing of seat belts, helmets, smoking, speed limits…. The list goes on and on. Have you ever asked WHY we regulate those things? It’s for the better good. You see, we are a country made up of billions of people. I realize that there are many people out there that think THEY are the only important people alive in this world but they are wrong. You see, laws help us to establish guidelines.
I have heard lots of people playing the “what if” game with the latest shootings. There are even parents suing the Newtown school district because they feel it didn’t do enough to protect their child (who is still alive). That’s ridiculous! We can’t make our schools much safer and adding guns to them won’t make them safer. i thought about that yesterday while I subbed at our high school. There are a lot of students in that school that are 18 and in our state able to own a gun. What if they brought them? Kids often have arguments that end in the throwing of punches. What if they don’t even have to get close enough to throw punches? What if they all have guns? How safe would our schools be then?
There is actually a town out west where it is the law that each resident own a gun. I don’t want one. Not to mention that I know a lot of people that shouldn’t own one!
We need gun control laws. They need to be federal so that they are the same everywhere you go. They need to restrict the kinds of weapons and ammo sold. They need to require a wait time and restrict anyone with a criminal past or mental conditions including clinical depression from owning/buying a gun. No one under the age of 21 should be allowed to own/buy a gun.
Look, it really is simple if you take your personal emotions out of it. We don’t allow people to buy, sell, distribute, make, exchange or own child pornography, right? Ask yourself why. It is actually covered by the constitution so why did your country outlaw it? If you can answer that then you know why we need gun laws.
